Ringing bells, donations for the less fortunate and little red buckets are common around Christmas in cities across the nation. This is just one of the many services the Salvation Army is a part of in the world. This charismatic Christian organization was founded in London by one time Methodist Minister, William Booth. Originally the organization was called East London Christian Mission but was later changed.
The Salvation Army is indeed modeled somewhat after the military with their own flag, uniform and their own music, typically Christian words set to popular folk songs. As the original founders of the organization would put on the "armour" of God the uniform was created.
